In Yellow Sunset Over El Morro, a radiant expanse of yellow and orange stretches across the upper plane, evoking the fading heat of a desert sky. Below, a dense, dark field of lava rock anchors the composition, reading as land, shadow, or prehistoric memory. A thin turquoise line divides the two, acting as both horizon and seam. Painted cardboard elements introduce subtle relief and geometry, adding a tactile counterpoint to the atmospheric surface. The piece balances bold color relationships with restrained, deliberate marks—suggesting place without defining it. It’s a meditation on light, land, and the lingering stillness that follows sunset in the New Mexico Malpais.
