Inspired by a one-inch square earring found on a hike in the Sandia Mountains, Turquoise Trail Mix brings together painted cardboard fragments that feel both deliberate and discovered. The prevailing turquoise field evokes the high desert sky and mineral tones of the Southwest, while intermittent accents of red and ochre interrupt the visual calm, adding warmth and tension. Each segment carries its own surface history—scuffs, fades, and painterly inconsistencies—creating a patchwork of individual moments that collectively resolve into a unified whole. The composition plays with the idea of containment versus drift: edges suggest order, yet no two shapes fully conform, allowing the eye to wander through subtle variations in color and texture. Rooted in both material exploration and place-based sensibility, the work reflects a kind of visual mapping—fragmented, intuitive, and quietly rhythmic.
