Spanish Is the Loving Tongue takes its title from a poem originally written as A Border Affair by cowboy poet Charles Badger Clark Jr. in 1907, later set to music in 1925 by Billy Simon. That sense of longing and quiet emotional exchange carries into the painting itself. A deep, expansive field of black sets the stage, where marks and symbols emerge like fragments of a half-remembered language. A glowing band of ochre anchors the composition below, offering warmth and grounding against the surrounding darkness. Linear gestures and small accents—scratched, drawn, and painted—suggest coded communication, while a red form enclosed in a loose boundary feels held, protected, perhaps softly spoken. The interplay of oil pastel, charcoal, and acrylic introduces a tactile richness, each material adding its own voice to the conversation.
