In Santa Fe on a Tight Budget, everyday materials are elevated into a carefully orchestrated composition that speaks to both constraint and creativity. Painted cardboard forms the central field, its corrugated texture revealed through layered applications of acrylic, creating a rhythmic surface that feels both weathered and intentional.
A folk art abstraction of the New Mexico zia symbol, this piece draws on a restrained palette of muted blacks, ochres, and yellows to establish a grounded, almost architectural presence, while a concentrated red form at the center acts as a focal anchor—suggesting a window, a doorway, or a symbolic core. Surrounding this central moment, circular elements—children’s blocks—introduce a measured cadence, reinforcing the painting’s sense of balance and structure.
Extending outward, wooden matchsticks punctuate the perimeter, creating rays that subtly break the boundary between object and environment. These linear protrusions create a sense of expansion, as if the composition cannot be fully contained within its edges. The interplay between flat surface and dimensional elements invites the viewer to shift perspective, engaging both visually and physically with the work.
Balancing economy of materials with sophistication of design, Santa Fe on a Tight Budget reflects an inventive spirit—where limitation becomes a catalyst for bold, thoughtful expression.
