In Green Onions, a richly worked surface unfolds through overlapping layers of color and gesture. Warm, earthy reds establish a grounded field, while translucent passages of green and pale blue sweep across the surface, creating a sense of movement and interaction.
The composition feels built over time—scraped, brushed, and reworked—allowing earlier decisions to remain visible beneath later ones. This layering creates depth not only in color, but in process, revealing the painting’s evolution as part of its final expression.
A loose, cross-like structure emerges within the composition, giving the work a subtle framework without confining its energy. The interplay between opacity and transparency allows forms to shift in and out of focus, keeping the eye engaged across the surface.
The title offers a nod to the classic groove of the same name, echoing the painting’s steady rhythm and improvisational feel. Like the music, the work builds through variation and repetition, creating a visual experience that is both grounded and fluid.
